National Oreo Cookie Day

Every year National Oreo Day falls on March 6th because that is the when the term oreo was first trademarked in 1912.

The Oreo started with two feuding brothers, Jacob and Joseph Loose. The two had a corporation called the American Biscuit and Manufacturing Company. The brothers eventually separated into two different companies which resulted in fighting over the positioning of cookies and their companies. Joseph combined with others to form Nabisco, which is where the Oreo came from.

There are plenty of different predictions and suggestions of where the name Oreo came from but it remains a mystery.

There was actually a pre-existing cookie that was about the same as the Oreo called Hydrox which hit the market in 1908. But it was quickly taken over by Nabisco’s famous Oreo and was dropped around 2003.

Now that you know all about the history of the famous crème stuffed cookie head on over to YouTube for a parody all about Oreos called “The White Stuff” that Weird Al wrote in 1992.
