Every year Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2nd. If Phil, the infamous groundhog from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania sees his shadow then we are to expect six more weeks of winter, whereas if there is no shadow then we can expect spring weather right around the corner.
What most do not know is that this celebration aligns with astronomy. The day marks the year’s first cross-quarter day, or midpoint between seasons. The movement of the Earth and the sun are what aid in predicting how soon spring is approaching.
The first Groundhog Day took place on February 2nd, 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The celebration is still celebrated in the same town today but is seen more as a fun way to celebrate history and continue traditions, as the famous groundhog has only a 40% success rate.
Did you know that there are specific people who handle Phil the groundhog? These inner circle fellows are called dignitaries and supposedly speak Groundhogese to the groundhog.
